Top Prize at this year’s Japanese Record Academy Awards
Congratulations to Teodor Currentzis and MusicAeterna for taking the top prize in this year’s Japanese Record Academy Awards for their recording of Mahler’s 6th Symphony. Alongside Best Orchestral Work, the recording has just been awarded BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR!
On news of this award Teodor said “We are thrilled to learn that our recording of Gustav Mahler’s sixth Symphony has been awarded not only the prize for Best Orchestral Work, but also received the prestigious Best Album of the Year prize in the 56th Record Academy Awards. We’d like to thank the Academy for this honour. We had a long, long mediation on this music, a long preparation before the recording. Even in those places in the symphony that are not as technically difficult, such as the Andante, we gave a lot of preparation and weight to create a kind of very special place, a very intimate place where I believe Mahler finds the opportunity to talk about his grief – this grief that is a manifestation of tragic beauty. We are very happy that our interpretation of Mahler’s great masterwork has been recognized by the Academy in this way and we look forward to performing in Japan for the first time in February.”
