Tages Woche: A conductor who is a rockstar in his heart
In Lucerne, and in particular on his new recording, Currentzis demonstrated that Rameau is not only flowery music, to be performed delicately. It is also powerful and solid, with meaty basses and edgy violins, but also with the most delicate pianissimo that sound like the breathless promise of love.
A prerequisite for this highly focussed and intense style of interpretation is the special relationship between conductor and ensemble. With Musica Aeterna, the Greek-born Currentzis has created an orchestra in Russia, which responds to the molding and shaping of his own ideas. Initially based in Novosibirsk, Siberia, word of his extraordinary work reached the Urals, and the city of Perm, where a music-loving governor invited him to come and work. Currentzis demanded much – and got what he wanted: good pay for all musicians, artistic independence and complete freedom to work without union control.
