MusicAeterna’s Recording of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 Has Become the Musical Basis for a New Production by Sasha Waltz

The premiere of the two-part choreographic performance Beethoven 7 by Sasha Waltz & Guests dance company took place at the Radialsystem cultural centre in Berlin.

The first part of the production features Diego Noguera’s electronic composition Freedom / Extasis, while the second part is set to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 recorded by the orchestra conducted by Teodor Currentzis two years ago in Delphi.

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung:

 — The symphony is performed on historical instruments, and it is an excellent recording, moreover, it is very special — not only because it is two minutes longer than the recording made in 2020 by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Kirill Petrenko, but also because of its darker colouring. It has more nuances and accentuated contrasts between piano and forte.

Choreography treats music both exigently and gently. Obstinate and timeless, like Currentzis’s interpretation itself, it represents a hybrid between the ultimate implanting into music and equally ultimate, even playful liberation from it.
